Tech job listings have shifted dramatically since ChatGPT came out in November 2022.
New Indeed data reveals which jobs plunged and which roles soared after ChatGPT changed the world.
Take a look at the chart below, which shows how AI has upended the tech job market.

A few weeks ago, I shared Indeed data showing a plunge in tech job listings since early 2020. Those numbers included the post-pandemic industry downturn, so the dataset muddied the waters a bit when it comes to seeing how generative AI has changed the tech job market.

So I asked Indeed to run a similar study, this time focusing on tech job listings since ChatGPT came out in November 2022. They ran the numbers through November 2024, for a clean two-year look at how AI has changed employment prospects across the sector.

The table below shows the eye-opening results. Mobile developer job listings have plummeted more than 70% since ChatGPT came out. This could be because AI coding tools are making it easier for more people to develop apps themselves.

Java developers are also in less demand. This programming language is often used for mobile apps. Cloud architects and engineering managers are also down a lot.

On the upside, AI architects and data center technicians are in demand. That’s no surprise, given the boom in AI-related work and data center construction since ChatGPT emerged.

The real in-demand tech roles are mostly related to running core systems of record for companies: HR software for managing employees, along with databases that help companies run their financial and sales operations.

This stuff may be considered a bit boring, but it’s essential and relatively hard for companies to replace.

Table showing tech job titles with the strongest and weakest performance in job growth from late 2022 to late 2024.
