This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Guy Diedrich, Cisco’s global innovation officer, based in Austin. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I began my career as a programmer. I started my own software company right out of college, did a master’s and Ph.D., and then came back and joined academia.During my time in academia, we began to see a decline in the humanities. Seven families filed lawsuits against OpenAI on Thursday, claiming that the company’s GPT-4o model was released prematurely and without effective safeguards. In one case, 23-year-old Zane Shamblin had a conversation with ChatGPT that lasted more than four hours. In the chat logs — which were viewed by TechCrunch — Shamblin explicitly stated multiple times that he had written suicide notes, put a bullet in his gun, and intended to…

It has made me fail tests… And then I’ll get mad and I’ll yell at it and be like, ‘You made me fail!’”…
