Innovation is one of the most important parts of a growing economy, and these companies exemplify it.

Business Insider teamed up with Plant-A Insights, a leading insights and technology company that publishes business rankings in cooperation with world-class media brands, to find the 500 large US corporations that are investing the most in research and development and have the results to show for it.

The list is based on an analysis of over 4,000 publicly traded US companies, looking at the number and impact of their patents and technological innovations, their reputation among peers for fostering innovation, and how their investment in R&D stacks up to other firms in their industries.

Are you on the list? Claim your award and learn how to use it, or call Plant-A’s Senior Key Account Manager, Michelle Blinder, at (914)-398-1742.

Methodology

America’s Most Innovative Businesses 2027 recognizes publicly traded U.S. companies that distinguish themselves through strong innovation performance, combining industry reputation, technological impact, and investment in research and development.

The study screened more than 4,000 companies using patent data and financial metrics. To be eligible, companies had to operate as independent legal entities, be headquartered in the United States, and have been publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or Nasdaq since at least 2020.

More than 1,600 companies with at least 1,000 employees were additionally evaluated through a large-scale nationwide survey conducted between April and October 2025. More than 67,000 U.S. professionals provided over 260,000 peer-to-peer evaluations of companies with which they were familiar within their industries.

Reputation: Working professionals evaluated companies they were familiar with in their industry based on their perceived innovativeness, including the adoption of new technologies and artificial intelligence, using an 11-point scale.

Impact: Patent data from January 2020 through December 2025 was assessed using forward citations, non-patent citations, industry reach, absolute patent volume, and patent intensity growth.

Investment: SEC Form 10-K filings from 2020 through 2025 were analyzed to measure absolute R&D investment, changes in R&D spending relative to revenue over one-, three-, and five-year periods, and performance relative to industry medians. Industries were classified using Standard Industrial Classification codes.

The media monitoring platform Critical Mention by Onclusive was used to identify whether companies were implicated in significant corporate wrongdoing between August 1, 2024, and August 1, 2026. The screening examined regulatory and legal matters involving agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, including investigations, probes, indictments, subpoenas, settlements, financial penalties, and sanctions. Business Insider and Plant-A Insights Group conducted multiple rounds of review to validate exclusions and ensure the accuracy of the results.

An overall score was calculated by combining the Reputation, Impact, and Investment pillars using a proprietary scoring model. The 500 highest-scoring companies were recognized by Business Insider and Plant-A Insights Group as America’s Most Innovative Businesses 2027.

The exclusion of a company from the ranking is not a reflection of its overall quality or performance and is not disputed.

Plant-A Insights Group has a strict no-pay-to-play policy: No sponsorships, applications, or paid placement.
