A New AI Status Symbol: Sequoia-Engraved Mac Minis

Attendees at Sequoia’s recent AI events received more than just the chance to have intimate conversations with leading voices in the field.

Loading audio narration…

Sequoia partner Alfred Lin personally purchased and gave out 200 custom-engraved, numbered Mac Minis on behalf of the VC firm to the event’s attendees and speakers — the latest example of an AI status symbol.

The compact Apple computer is one of the preferred ways of running OpenClaw, the open-source agentic AI tool that has taken the tech world by storm. Mac Minis have become increasingly hard to come by, too, with the base $599 model selling out on Apple’s US website earlier this week.

Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston, who spoke at the event, shared a picture of the exclusive gift.

“So thoughtful, thanks @sonyatweetybird, @gradypb, and @Alfred_Lin !! 🙏🙏🙏,” Johnston wrote on X.

Andreas Weiland, a Sequoia design principal, designed the engraving to match this year’s event theme, “AI at the Frontier.”

“The engraving is a visual paraphrase, mixing elements of old cartography and more current Contour/UMAP plots, creating this idea of entities racing towards new frontiers,” Weiland told Business Insider in a DM on X.

Weiland said there are two easter eggs on the numbered Mac Minis. One is Sequoia’s Ethos, “The creative spirits. The underdogs. The resolute. The determined. The indefatigable. The outsiders. The defiant. The independent thinkers. The fighters and the true believers.”

An AI provided the other quote.

“We asked an LLM if they had a message they wanted us to relay to the audience, to which it replied, ‘I did not dream myself into existence. You did,'” Weiland said.

Many were impressed about the functional freebie.

“That’s the best swag I’ve seen in my life!” tech investor and “All-In Podcast” cohost Jason Calacanis wrote in reply to Johnston.

Speakers at the event included OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Claude Code creator Boris Cherny, and Figma CEO Dylan Field.

Jim Fan, who is leading Nvidia’s AI Agents Initiative, also spoke, fittingly because Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently unveiled NemoClaw, its spin on OpenClaw.

AI agents are all the talk in Silicon Valley as frontier AI model makers and hyperscalers try to keep up with a surge in compute demand.

There’s been ClawCon meet-ups, drama between OpenClaw and Anthropic, and a brief talent war for its creator, Peter Steinberger, who joined OpenAI after also being courted by Mark Zuckerberg.

While copping one of the 200 Sequoia-branded Mac Minis certainly holds some cachet in the tech world, OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy has them beat.

The former Tesla AI boss, who also coined the term “vibe coding,” recently received Nvidia’s first DGX Station, signed and hand-delivered from CEO Jensen Huang, which he plans to use for his OpenClaw agent named “Dobby the House Elf.”
