Weight-loss drug Wegovy is now available in the form of a pill in the United States, the Scandinavian drug-maker Novo Nordisk announced on Monday, Jan. 5.
The first-of-its kind pill offers 1.5 and 4 milligram doses at $149 per month (or $5 per day) for self-paying patients, the Denmark-based company said in a news release.
The drug was first offered as an injectable. GLP-1 drugs were initially used to treat diabetes but have since been approved to treat obesity.
The oral GLP-1 was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December and is available through more than 70,000 pharmacies including CVS and Costco, according to the release. It’s also available via providers including Ro, LifeMD and Weight Watchers, NovoCare Pharmacy and GoodRx.

“Wegovy pill is here, and it represents a significant innovation as the first and only GLP-1 pill for weight loss,” Ed Cinca, the drug maker’s senior vice president of marketing and patient solutions released in a news release. “We have worked to ensure Wegovy pill is affordable and accessible to those who need it, however they choose to receive their care.”
The company’s U.S. rival Eli Lilly plans to release a weight-loss pill this spring, Reuters reported.
