Google has been making cuts as it shapes itself to be faster and more efficient

Google cut employees in its Cloud division this week, Business Insider has learned.

The cuts predominantly affected staff working in user experience roles, including employees working on design and UX research, according to a person familiar with the matter and several LinkedIn posts reviewed by Business Insider.

Google has been making rolling cuts over the past two years as it shapes itself to be faster and more efficient. Leaders told staff in August that it had cut down on managers running small teams. Googlers are also being pushed to use AI more in their day-to-day work.

Affected employees in this round of cuts were informed via email on Monday that their roles were being eliminated, according to several posts on LinkedIn. The full number of employees affected could not be learned.

A Google spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

Some of the affected roles were in quantitative user experience research — a job that involves using data to understand user behavior — according to a person familiar.

Several people announced on LinkedIn that their roles at Google had been affected, or that their teams had been hit. One person wrote that they were on an O-1 visa, which requires them to find a new role within 60 days or else depart the United States.
