A top White House official publicly accused Moonshot AI of essentially stealing from Anthropic, intensifying the debate over China-based open source AI models.”We have information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic’s Fable for the development of its K3 model,” Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote on X Wednesday morning. We have information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic’s Fable for the development of its K3 model. To do this they developed a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large scale distillation against U.S. models, allowing them to quickly switch between multiple methods of…— Director Michael Kratsios…
As Chinese open-weight AI models grow in capability and popularity, arguments about what should be done about them have once again reached a fever pitch. There’s talk that the Trump administration might try to ban them (though it hasn’t yet acted on the idea). Meanwhile, proprietary model makers, particularly OpenAI and Anthropic, appear increasingly concerned about them. Open-weight models such as Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 or Alibaba’s Qwen offer inference at a fraction of the token cost of closed-source models from these large U.S. labs. The fear is that they also pose some sort of threat. Certainly, they threaten the…
Substack has launched a new feature that can show you which of your favorite newsletters are being written using AI. This week, the newsletter and writing platform announced an integration with the AI writing detection software Pangram that will allow users to scan posts, comments, and replies on Substack’s app to see an estimate of how much of the content was written by a human and how much was AI. In the short term, the move might be bad for Substack’s business, as it could expose many of the newsletters on its platform that aren’t entirely written by people. That…
OpenAI announced Wednesday that it will spend $750 billion on infrastructure through 2030, some 25% more than it estimated earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal reported. The renewed blitz comes as its Stargate data center project appears to have stalled. The first salvo in OpenAI’s spending spree will be a $20 billion data center campus in Georgia known as Project Camellia. The development will span 1,400 acres northwest of Savannah and will draw at least 3.2 gigawatts of power from Georgia Power, the region’s utility. The generating capacity is expected to become available between 2028 and 2032. The AI…
Elon Musk’s posting habits are putting Tesla under the microscope — again.Regulators looking into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving have asked the company for more information about a series of X posts in which CEO Elon Musk said drivers could text and make an espresso while using the automated driving assist technology. In a request for information sent to Tesla on July 2, officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked the company to clarify posts made on Musk and Tesla’s accounts. These include a post from December 2025 in which Musk said FSD users could text and drive “depending on [the]…
Michigan elementary school teachers will be required to take literacy training by the 2031-2032 school year, under a new law signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Tuesday. The law requires K-5 instructors who teach reading or language arts to receive training and requires the state Department of Education to select at least two vendors each year to provide the training. “We all want results for our kids,” Whitmer said at an event in Southfield promoting the new education budget. “And none of us is patient about it, nor should we be. We want those results fast. But here’s what we know:…
The browser wars have entered a new phase this year: The fight isn’t just over search results anymore — it’s over which company’s AI gets to act on your behalf inside the browser. Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari still dominate the market overall, with Chrome’s edge coming largely from how aggressively it has woven generative AI into search. But 2026 has brought a wave of new entrants — from well-funded startups to Big Tech — all betting that the browser is about to become less like a window onto the web and more like an assistant that gets things done…
Mark Cuban joked that the AI buildout could result in pickleball fans having plenty more venues to choose from. The tech billionaire said during the latest episode of the “All-In” podcast that if AI models and data centers become more efficient over time, much of the computing capacity being built today will become redundant. The former “Shark Tank” investor said that so-called hyperscalers like Meta and Alphabet, which are collectively pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into building data centers, are correctly anticipating that AI usage will rise over time. But he predicted that “technological breakthroughs” will make AI cheaper and more power-efficient.…
Passionfroot, a German startup building a marketplace connecting B2B creators with brands, said on Wednesday it has raised $15 million in a Series A funding round led by Insight Partners. Rebecca Liu-Doyle, managing director at Insight Partners, said Passionfroot is placed well at a time when creators are specializing as AI companies look for more visibility. “Passionfroot has the perfect dynamics on both sides to warrant a true marketplace for B2B creators. On the demand side, there is increasing consumerization of the way B2B brands go to market. That’s a product of, in part, AI technology requiring evangelism, narrative building,…
