CLEVELAND (AP) — For a frightening moment, the AL Central race hardly mattered.Guardians designated hitter David Fry was expected to be hospitalized overnight after he was hit in the face by a pitch from Detroit’s Tarik Skubal in the sixth inning of Cleveland’s 5-2 win over the Tigers on Tuesday night, a victory that deadlocked the division.Fry squared around to try to bunt a 99 mph fastball from Skubal and the pitch struck him in the nose and mouth area. As Fry collapsed in the batter’s box and immediately grabbed his bloodied face, a visibly shaken Skubal threw off his…
This is not California state senator Scott Wiener’s first attempt at addressing the dangers of AI. In 2024, Silicon Valley mounted a fierce campaign against his controversial AI safety bill, SB 1047, which would have made tech companies liable for the potential harms of their AI systems. Tech leaders warned that it would stifle America’s AI boom. Governor Gavin Newsom ultimately vetoed the bill, echoing similar concerns, and a popular AI hacker house promptly threw an “SB 1047 Veto Party.” One attendee told me, “Thank god, AI is still legal.” Now Wiener has returned with a new AI safety bill,…
Major medical groups and medical experts are urging women to continue taking Tylenol as needed during pregnancy, citing the health risks caused by fever during pregnancy.Medical groups always encourage women to consult with their doctor before taking any new medication during pregnancy, but continue to emphasize that acetaminophen, best known by the brand name Tylenol, is the safest painkiller throughout pregnancy. Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the nation’s leading membership organization for OB-GYNs, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, a 6,500-member organization focused on high-risk pregnancy care, issued statements in support of the use of Tylenol during pregnancy…
How does one of the world’s most powerful companies please powerful Republicans — without actually doing that much?Mark Zuckerberg figured out that trick in the summer of 2024. That’s when he sent a letter to Congress that sort-of-but-not-really apologized for behavior conservatives have accused Big Tech platforms of for years — but also said the real bad actors were Joe Biden and his administration. Now, we’re seeing Google use the same playbook, with one twist, which we’ll get to in a minute. But the very big picture is that Google, like Meta in 2024, is attempting to give a win to Jim…
As Google’s project manager for developer tools, Ryan Salva has a front-row seat to the ways AI tools are changing coding. Formerly of GitHub and Microsoft, he’s now responsible for tools like Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist, nudging developers into the new world of agentic programming. His team released new third-party research on Tuesday showing how developers actually use AI tools — and how much progress is left to make. I sat down with Salva to talk about the report and his personal experience with AI coding tools. This interview was edited for length and clarity. Every year, Google…
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut officials have agreed to a $2.25 million settlement of a lawsuit over a sex offender’s killing of visiting nurse Joyce Grayson at a halfway house in 2023 — a case that reignited calls for better protections for home health care workers across the country.A state judge in Hartford approved the settlement on Thursday in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Grayson’s husband. Meanwhile, settlement talks with other defendants in the lawsuit, including Grayson’s employer, are continuing, said Kelly Reardon, a lawyer for Grayson’s family.Grayson, a 63-year-old mother of six and a nurse for 36 years,…
Android users are now able to edit their photos with AI, Google announced on Tuesday. In Google Photos, users will be able to talk to the AI using natural language to describe how they want to edit their photo via either voice or text, Google says. The feature is designed to make it easier to edit photos without having to understand which editing tools to use or where they can be found in the app. The Gemini-powered feature was initially made available to those with the newly launched Pixel 10 devices in the U.S., introduced in August. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A former Omega Psi Phi pledge who alleges he was so severely beaten during the Nu Eta chapter’s “Hell Night” that he had to relearn how to walk is now suing the fraternity, the University of Mississippi, multiple other people and organizations. According to the federal lawsuit, Rafeal Joseph and other pledges were struck repeatedly with a wooden paddle made from a two-by-four plank on April 16, 2023. Afterwards, Joseph went to the hospital where he underwent a blood transfusion and emergency surgery while being treated for bruised ribs, a hematoma, posterior compartment syndrome and rhabdomyolysis,…

His matches at Bethpage Black count no more than anyone else, whether it’s Patrick Cantlay or Harris English or Bryson DeChambeau.“At the end of the day, it’s just all about going and winning your point,” Justin Thomas said Tuesday. “All of us are very happy that he’s on our team this week…
