It’s Tesla’s earnings day, which means another chance for Elon Musk’s company to trade in its EV label for AI.From robotaxis to humanoid robots, Tesla has moved well beyond its initial core of just building electric vehicles.BI’s William Edwards has a breakdown on all the big projects Wall Street analysts are keen to hear more about on this afternoon’s earnings call.Tesla has been subtly pivoting its strategy for years, but it’s now reaching a tipping point. The end of the federal EV tax credit last month and the undeniable rise of Chinese rivals have made selling EVs difficult, to say…

Forget colorful leaves. Any caregiver knows that the real signs of fall are kids with coughs, sneezes and sniffles.Autumn marks the start of respiratory virus season, when colds, flu and other bugs start circulating — especially among the very young.A recent study confirmed what many families intuitively know: The littlest students harbor the most germs.Children in pre-kindergarten and elementary school showed highest rates of virus detection compared with older students and staff, according to research published in the journal Pediatrics.“Young children can have up to 10 respiratory viruses a year as their immune systems are introduced to different infections for…
(This is an excerpt of the Health Rounds newsletter, where we present latest medical studies on Tuesdays and Thursdays.)By Nancy Lapid(Reuters) -Cancer patients who received mRNA-based COVID vaccines within 100 days of starting treatment with widely used immunotherapies were twice as likely to be alive three years after beginning treatment, researchers reported.Among 180 such patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who received an mRNA-based COVID vaccine from Moderna or Pfizer/BioNTech, the median survival, or the point at which half the patients had died, was 37.33 months. Among 704 cancer patients who did not receive an mRNA COVID shot, median…
The generative AI boom has fueled the growth of single-person startups and companies operating without external funding. For Amazon Web Services, these “solopreneurs” and bootstrapped startups have emerged as a “blind spot” in its customer discovery process, which heavily relies on connections with venture capital firms, according to an internal document obtained by Business Insider. This has caused AWS to miss out on several high-growth startups as early customers, including SurgeAI and Base44. SurgeAI grew to $1 billion in revenue without outside funding, while Base44, once solely owned by its founder, was acquired by Wix for $80 million.”This blind spot poses increasing…
In 2022, when Yoni Rechtman’s boss asked where he wanted to be in five years, the newly hired venture capitalist told him, “Not here.”What might have sounded like defiance was exactly what Kevin Colleran, managing director of Slow Ventures, wanted to hear. The firm doesn’t promote from within. It keeps funds small — “easier to return many multiples of success,” Colleran said — and so the firm needs fewer investors. This month, Slow made an exception to its rule, giving Rechtman, 30, a seat at the partners’ table. The firm, now nearing $1 billion in investor capital, has four partners investing out…
(Corrects ‘infection’ to ‘disease’ in paragraph 5 to clarify what the inactivated polio vaccine protects against, whether dosed fully or fractionally)By Jennifer RigbyLONDON (Reuters) -Eradicating polio is still possible despite significant funding cuts, global health officials said on Tuesday as they outlined how they will cope with the shortfall. The budget of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a partnership including the World Health Organization and the Gates Foundation, will take a 30% cut in 2026 and has a $1.7 billion funding gap up to 2029, the organisation says. The shortfall is largely driven by a global pullback from foreign aid, led by…

Head count is no longer the hot success indicator, says a Y Combinator partner.”It’s the right time to hire when things are so busy that you can’t even find a slot in your calendar to do an interview with a candidate,” YC partner Gustaf Alströmer said in an episode of YC’s “Office Hours” podcast released on Tuesday. He said this is when things are at their “breaking point” and the cofounders must work beyond their regular schedules to keep things running.Alströmer, who worked as a product lead at Airbnb from 2012 to 2017, added that hiring can take about three…
By Bhanvi Satija and Maggie FickLONDON (Reuters) -Boardroom drama at Wegovy-maker Novo Nordisk has laid bare the company’s biggest challenge: how to better tap into America’s mass market for weight-loss drugs. The Danish drugmaker that initially soared on the success of its obesity drug has lost its market lead to U.S. rival Eli Lilly and cheaper copycats, with pressure on prices from U.S. President Donald Trump and growing direct-to-consumer sales. On Tuesday, Novo’s top investor, the non-profit Novo Nordisk Foundation, moved to take control of the company’s board.
