Elon Musk has achieved an initial win in his dispute with Germany’s public broadcaster ZDF: The network said it would remove language about Musk’s alleged role in the unrest in Northern Ireland from a program that aired last week. That Musk is a controversial figure for German media is probably nothing new to the tech entrepreneur. But now he appears to have had enough of ZDF. On Monday evening, he announced on X that he would take “legal action” against the public broadcaster over what he called its “outrageous lies.”The trigger was the introduction to the June 12 edition of the…
The vibes are off at Meta, its top leadership said internally.Meta chief technology officer Andrew “Boz” Bosworth said morale at the tech giant is near an all-time low as recent mass layoffs and internal AI initiatives roil many longtime employees.Morale is “maybe not the worst it’s ever been in 20 years here, but it’s probably up there. It’s definitely up there,” Bosworth said during an internal “Tuesdays with Boz” chat on June 2, four people who were on the call told Business Insider.”I can think Cambridge Analytica was probably the worst,” Bosworth added in reference to the scandal about millions…
SpaceX briefly passed Amazon to become the fifth-most valuable company in the world, and nearly eclipsed Microsoft, before the company’s shares pared back those gains before the market closed Tuesday. The newly public company’s stock had already climbed 20% on Monday — its first full day of trading. Tuesday’s news that SpaceX was acquiring AI coding company Cursor, along with the start of options trading on SpaceX’s shares, sent the share price even higher, spiking its valuation to $2.9 trillion before it ultimately settled back down. This is all despite the fact that SpaceX posted a $4.9 billion loss on…
Microsoft was recently in talks with Oracle about leasing the company’s cloud infrastructure, but the deal fell through due to security and compliance concerns, according to people familiar with the matter. One of the people said that the deal could have been worth more than $3 billion. The failed talks highlight a growing reality of the AI boom: even the world’s largest technology companies are running short on computing power. As demand for AI services soars, cloud providers like Microsoft are increasingly competing not just for customers but for the infrastructure and capacity needed to run their own products. That scramble is…
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Education Department is handing off two of its most important functions, giving oversight of special education and civil rights to other agencies. With the latest moves, the department will have offloaded the vast majority of its duties.Dissolving the department entirely requires an act of Congress. Still, the latest developments bring the administration significantly closer to fulfilling President Donald Trump’s pledge to shut down the Education Department, which he says will give education “back to the states.”The administration is framing Tuesday’s moves as a partnership between federal agencies intended to reduce bureaucracy. The Justice Department will handle…
Google on Tuesday released the final version of its Android 17 operating system, as well as its counterpart for smartwatches, Wear OS 7. The latest release, which arrives first on its own Pixel devices, is also accompanied by a Pixel Drop, bringing new features that include support for the latest AI models, like the music-generation model Lyria 3, the multimodal Gemini Omni, and speech-to-translation tools for the Pixel 10a with AudioLM. The latest feature release underscores Google’s strategy of using its Android and Pixel devices to showcase its latest AI technology. While its rival Apple is focused on catching up…
Getting cited by AI is easier than earning consumers’ trust, according to a new report from WordPress VIP, the Automattic-owned company that offers an enterprise version of the WordPress publishing platform. As brands race to have their links appear in AI search results, consumers have grown more skeptical about whether they can actually trust the answers they’re getting. Per the report, 60% of consumers in the U.S. say that brands that use “AI” in their messaging are a turnoff, and 86% don’t fully trust AI and still want to explore original sources. Notably, 42% of consumers said that AI-generated answers…
SpaceX has captured the attention of media, investors, and the public for years now — interest propelled by the company’s reusable rocket launches and the rise of its Starlink satellite network, and, of course, for its founder and CEO Elon Musk. But in its 24-year history, nothing quite compared to its initial public offering. Everyone seemed interested — perhaps because of the sheer size of the IPO. The company priced its 555.6 million shares at $135 each to raise $75 billion, making it the largest IPO in history and turning Musk into the world’s first trillionaire. That total raised figure…
Robinhood, the stock-trading app that became synonymous with the pandemic-era’s retail-investing boom, is cutting 10% of its workforce and joining tech’s “Great Flattening.”CEO Vlad Tenev told employees in a memo on Tuesday that the company’s business “has never been stronger,” but said Robinhood needed to become leaner as it scales. Tenev said the company was “flattening” its organizational structure and reducing head count to avoid becoming a “heavily-layered organization.”In an SEC filing on Tuesday, Robinhood said the cuts come as June’s month-to-date average daily trading volumes hit record levels across equities, options, and prediction markets. In a February filing, the…
The Department of Justice on Monday sided with xAI in a lawsuit that sought to stop the company’s use of dozens of unpermitted natural gas turbines near its Memphis data centers, according to Wired. The DOJ said if the NAACP, which filed the lawsuit in April, prevails, the result would undermine “American national, economic, and energy security by seeking to shut off the power supply for artificial-intelligence innovation that supports the Department of War’s military operations.” The memorandum filed by the Justice Department said that Grok is one of four AI models that support “mission-critical operations,” such as its recent…
