Hello Yahoo readers! My name is Kaitlin Reilly and I am here to share the best tips from around the internet. This week, much of the United States saw a major heat wave, thanks to a heat dome that sent temperatures soaring above 100°F in cities including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. While much of the heat has since dissipated, summers are getting hotter overall — which means it’s important you know how to protect yourself from extreme heat. The best thing you can do when temperatures soar? Stay indoors and keep as cool as possible, whether that’s chilling at…
In his 1986 book “Engines of Creation,” engineer K. Eric Drexler — often called the godfather of nanotechnology — made a prediction.”The coming era of molecular machines will mean the end of many limits: the limit of scarcity, the limit of slow development, the limit of ignorance enforced by the lack of tools,” he wrote.Reading those words a few years later, when he was 16, Matthew Putman started thinking.”Our bodies work as these little micro-machines where you have ribosomes and enzymes and things that are working and replicating and making things all the time, but our factories work the way…
AGI is a pretty silly debate. It’s only really important in one way: It governs how the world’s most important AI partnership will change in the coming months. That’s the deal between OpenAI and Microsoft. This is the situation right now: Until OpenAI achieves Artificial General Intelligence — where AI capabilities surpass those of humans — Microsoft gets a lot of valuable technological and financial benefits from the startup. For instance, OpenAI must share a significant portion of its revenue with Microsoft. That’s billions of dollars. One could reasonably argue that this might be why Sam Altman bangs on about OpenAI getting…
LONDON (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz’s first match on a grass court came just six years ago. He’s obviously a quick study. When Wimbledon gets started Monday, the 22-year-old from Spain will play in the first Centre Court match of this fortnight, an honor reserved for the previous year’s men’s champion. The contest against Fabio Fognini will open Alcaraz’s a bid for a third consecutive championship at the place. That’s something only four men have achieved in the Open era, which began in 1968: Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Not bad company.Alcaraz already is 5-0 in Grand Slam finals, which…

Even IT pros are susceptible to hackers these days.According to an FBI warning, a notorious cybercriminal group known as Scattered Spider is deceiving IT help desks into targeting the US airline industry.Scattered Spider gained attention in 2023 for hacking both MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment within a week of each other.”These actors rely on social engineering techniques, often impersonating employees or contractors to deceive IT help desks into granting access,” the FBI said on X. “These techniques frequently involve methods to bypass multi-factor authentication (MFA), such as convincing help desk services to add unauthorized MFA devices to compromised accounts.”The FBI said the group…
An open letter from authors including Lauren Groff, Lev Grossman, R.F. Kuang, Dennis Lehane, and Geoffrey Maguire calls on book publishers to pledge to limit their use of AI tools, for example by committing to only hire human audiobook narrators. The letter argues that authors’ work has been “stolen” by AI companies: “Rather than paying writers a small percentage of the money our work makes for them, someone else will be paid for a technology built on our unpaid labor.” Among other commitments, the authors call for publishers to “make a pledge that they will never release books that were…

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — After leaving one chip in the rough and losing a bit of trust on the greens, Padraig Harrington was looking for something to give him hope heading into what figures to be a tumultuous final day at the topsy, turvy Broadmoor.A chip-in from 20 yards for birdie on No. 18 did the trick. It gave Harrington a share of the lead, a spot in the final group and left him one more good round away from winning the U.S. Senior Open for the second time in four years. Harrington’s chip-in Saturday pulled him into a…
Looks like Meta isn’t done poaching talent from OpenAI. Earlier this week, TechCrunch reported that Meta had hired influential OpenAI researcher Trapit Bansal, and according to The Wall Street Journal, it also hired three other researchers from the company. Now The Information is reporting four more Meta hires from OpenAI: Researchers Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren. This hiring spree comes after the April launch of Meta’s Llama 4 AI models, which reportedly did not perform as well as CEO Mark Zuckerberg had hoped. (The company was also criticized over the version of Llama that it used…
