I’m a UCLA Student. Here’s How I Use OpenAI’s New Atlas Browser.

UCLA Neuroscience & Entrepreneurship student Monica Adams got early access to ChatGPT Atlas, a new tool that merges OpenAI’s chatbot with a web browser and the startup’s AI Agent system.

Here’s our guide on how to use this tool. As for Adams, she shared three things she gets out of Atlas. Her words have been edited for length and clarity.

Active Learning: “I use Atlas to quiz me on unlabeled diagrams for my physiological science class. To prepare for a lab where we were introduced to all the cranial and spinal nerves and practiced on human cadavers and specimens, I used the Ask ChatGPT button to quiz me on the images I chose and looked up. It’s so much easier than downloading or screenshotting the image and then opening ChatGPT on the side of my iPad to have a slower conversation.”

Staying Organized: “I love using Atlas to look up emails I can’t find but know I saw in Gmail! It can make sure I am up to date in internships, research labs, and anything that needs ASAP response. I am applying to the Nathanson Lab at UCLA Health, and my lab manager and a person at the volunteer office were emailing with me back and forth about the onboarding process.

For example, there was a HIPAA training link I wanted to find, and then the link to the volunteer onboarding page with all the trainings that I couldn’t find. I actually used this again this morning because there was another training that is still pending/I haven’t completed that I overlooked, and I couldn’t find the email that noted what I still had to do (my email inbox is flooded and crazy). Basically, I open up Gmail and then search the associated names and “UCLA Health” and enter a prompt (see image). I also further asked ChatGPT to give me the entire email thread in the chat so I didn’t have to open up multiple email threads one at a time.”

Catching up: “I also use ChatGPT to catch up on missed lectures. I recently got stress fractures in my foot and have been on crutches, so I missed several classes in my Physics 5C course—right before a midterm. My favorite feature was being able to open the lecture directly in Canvas and use the Ask ChatGPT button on the side, without having to download and upload a huge PDF.

Before, I’d take screenshots of confusing slides, but now I can give ChatGPT the full context in Atlas of what my professor is teaching. It understands how the concepts are being developed throughout the lecture, which makes it feel like I have a personal tutor walking me through it.”
